Major Recent Gaston County Announcements & Developments

Light Rail plans extended to Gaston County. In February, the Charlotte Metropolitan Transit Commission approved Light Rail plans to Gaston County, opening up major TOD-oriented development opportunities along what is being proposed as the CATS Silver Line. ​

  • Major developments are already happening along the proposed light rail corridor in Belmont, with a $58 million, 325-unit luxury apartment development just approved by city leaders.

  • An additional study will be started this summer to consider the light rail line's extension into the heart of Gastonia

  • Gaston County would have direct Light Rail access to CLT Airport and Uptown

CaroMont Health 325 million announcement

CaroMont Health announces $325 million investment in Gaston County over next five years. The top-rated healthcare system will expand its regional footprint in Gaston.

  • A new hospital in Belmont will be built on Belmont Abbey College's campus

  • A 50-room critical care tower will be added to CaroMont's main campus in Gastonia

  • CaroMont will also build several other medical office buildings across the county.

Sonic Automotive's EchoPark cutting ribbon on new office project in Gaston​ this June.

  • The 500 white collar job announcement represents Gaston County's largest office project to date.

TechWorks of Gaston County, our "Opportunity Factory," now open.

  • The public-private project received support from State of N.C., local government and business.

  • The Tech and Innovation hub will attract high-growth potential startups, create jobs and train tech talent.

Gastonia FUSE District's multi-use sports & entertainment complex opening 2021, paving the way for more private development.

  • The City of Gastonia has initiated a financing process for the $24 million anchor project.

  • The multi-use sports and entertainment complex is set to open in 2021.

  • The FUSE District will provide opportunities for new residential and commercial development.

Mixed-use mill redevelopment projects across Gaston making progress.

  • Gastonia's Loray Mill is beginning its second phase of apartment development late summer/early fall 2019.

  • Bessemer City's $32 million Osage Mill redevelopment project is expected to open 2021/2022. 

  • Trenton, Chronicle and historic Mt. Holly mill redevelopment planning processes underway.

County citizens are investing in education​ & workforce development programs

  • A $250 million bond package and a 1/4 cent sales tax was approved by voters in 2018 to fund new schools and capital investments.

  • New School Choice programs for Gaston County School students are beginning Fall 2019, offering specialized education track options for students.

  • Several new school openings have been announced, and ground breaking ceremonies and construction have begun on new facilities.

  • Our innovative Career & Technical Education Programs are setting the standard for the nation to follow.

  • Gaston County has the two best public high schools in the Charlotte region for college and career readiness.

Our strong manufacturing base is growing.

  • Dhollandia MFG announced in 2018 its North American headquarters would be in Gaston County, creating 200 jobs and investing $30 million here.

  • Our home-grown world headquartered companies, American & Efird, Parkdale Inc., and Pharr continue growing.

County leaders are using an integrated county-wide development strategy to create new CLT Airport-related development opportunities.

  • Published in late 2018 and gaining unanimous support from public officials, the Gaston County Charlotte Airport Economic Positioning Strategy has "won" many early victories that demonstrate its success and potential.

  • To date the plan is the most comprehensive development strategy for Gaston County, featuring economic opportunity areas and catalytic projects that look into the future with 20 year horizons.

Perceptions of Gaston are shifting.

  • A 2014 survey of Charlotte and Gaston developers and residents revealed perceptions of Gaston were neutral to negative.

  • In 2015, a publicly and privately funded effort established the successful county-wide image and branding campaign for Gaston County, called the Gaston Outside campaign.

  • A follow-up 2018 survey showed those perceptions had flipped, shifting to positive to neutral perceptions of Gaston County.

Our Quality of Life

From our borders just three miles west of CLT Douglas Int'l Airport and ten miles west of Uptown Charlotte to our amazing schools and walkable downtowns, it is no surprise that Gaston County is being recognized across the country for the opportunity that lives here.
